112 EV Charging Stations To Be Installed Around Iceland

According to The Iceland Review and an announcement from the Government of Iceland’s website, a grant of over ISK 30 million will help support the shift to electric cars and other electric vehicles in Iceland by increasing charging infrastructure. In fact, the new capacity will be for the charging of 110 electric vehicles at any given time. The project is part of the government’s action plan on climate change and infrastructure development.
This news lends itself to differences in leadership across the pond from the US compared to the current US administration.

President Grímssonso related that there are people who are game-changers, people who take action, people who do things, innovators. The President of Iceland spoke of the transformation that needs to take place in every community and every country in the world. President Grímssonso reflected on the countries and people that are doing things, that we must consider, Grímssonso incites us to understand completely that, “Without such actions, our children and grandchildren will not be able to enjoy the world, our planet, as we have.”

This week, the Government of Iceland’s website continues (the following English text via Google translate), “Three government ministers this summer announced a targeted development of infrastructure for the exchange of energy in transport. On the same day, it advertised for investment grants to build recharging facilities for electric cars at accommodations [hotels and such]. The Energy Fund was entrusted with the allocation of the grants. A total of 26 grants will be awarded to install 112 charging points across the country. The total amount of the grants amounts to over ISK 30 million. At least half of the applicant’s counterpart contribution is expected and the total investment of the projects is therefore at least ISK 60 million.”
With this added infrastructure, Iceland will support individuals as well as fleets and electric car rentals. It is important to support rental car fleets of electric vehicles to maximize electrification of ground transport. Rental cars constitute almost half of all registered cars in Iceland. Thus, the grants intend to increase even more potential for charging at accommodations for car rentals in Iceland.
Investment grants are also coming for fast-charging stations.
