The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has generated P6.147 billion in revenues as of October 14, exceeding the P4.786-billion collection target it set for this year.
In a statement, the regulator said that while the current figure was P1.361 billion higher than the actual target, it sought to further exceed this by as much as P2 billion.
According to the NTC, this marked the fourth straight year it was able to beat the target.
“This year’s achievement is [the] NTC’s way of showing its full support to the national government and the public service programs pushed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte — priorities of which are on infrastructure, agriculture and rural development, and peace and order,” NTC Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba was quoted as saying in the statement.
Among those regulated by the NTC are cable and commercial television operators, broadcast radio stations, telecommunications companies, and two-way radio operators.
Together with the Department of Information and Communications Technology, the NTC led the government’s third telco initiative, which ended in November with the selection of the Mislatel Consortium, now called Dito Telecommunity Corp. The firm bagged the coveted frequencies and permit it needed to operate in July.
Dito, backed by Davao City-based businessman Dennis Uy and China Telecommunications, aims to be operational by 2020.
