Service has been restored to the Expo Line after high winds carried a tree onto the tracks, causing major delays Friday afternoon.
The obstructed guideway disrupted service between Metrotown and Commercial-Broadway Stations for two hours before TransLink spokesperson Jill Drews said that normal service was resuming.
A wind warning remains in effect in Vancouver, and heavy gusts have felled trees, forced ferry cancellations, and caused power outages throughout the southern region of the province.
But none of these incidents had the impact of a downed tree on the guideway, shutting down service between East Vancouver and Burnaby during the Friday rush-hour commute.

Vancouver actor Mick Ramos shared photos to Twitter showing a crack in a SkyTrain car door and a chunk missing from the car’s exterior, damage he said was caused when a tree branch fell onto the car just after leaving the 29th Avenue station.
Hey @TransLink, a big tree branch fell onto our Skytrain car and broke one of the door windows. Happened just after leaving 29th Ave. pic.twitter.com/9M0MqLJeH2

Customers leaving Vancouver were given two options for alternative service: they can switch to the Millennium Line at Commercial-Broadway Station and transfer back to the Expo Line at Production Way or Lougheed Stations. Or they could take the bus.
What they should not do, as TransLink so often reminds, is attempt to walk along the guideway.

But that didn’t stop some folks desperate to start their weekend from trying exactly that.
Commuters should continue to expect gaps in service throughout the evening.
