THE water level at Angat dam, the primary source of domestic supply for Metro Manila, may continue to decline over lack of rainfall, the state-run weather bureau said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Thursday recorded Angat’s elevation at 185.87 meters, a 0.36-meter drop from the previous day. This is way below the 210-meter normal high water level and only more than 5 meters above the 180-meter minimum operating level.

Pagasa hydrologist Edgar Dela Cruz said the continued decline was expected if no significant rainfall or weather disturbance would come in the next few days.

Angat’s elevation started to drop after reaching 191 meters during the last week of September. Dela Cruz said typhoons in the past month have recurved and did not bring significant rains in the country, especially in Central Luzon, where Angat is located.

On Thursday, water concessionaires started implementing a new round of service interruptions. DIVINA NOVA JOY DELA CRUZ
