Homicide investigators are looking into a serious assault that took place early Tuesday morning in Chilliwack.
Chilliwack RCMP received a report just after midnight of an assault with a weapon in the downtown area near Yale Road and Fletcher Street. Officers found a 27-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound.
Police say the victim was taken to hospital where he remains on life support but is not expected to survive, so the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team was called in.
There have been no arrests.
“The victim in this case was known to police,” said IHIT spokesman Const. Harrison Mohr. “This appears to have been a targeted shooting, although our investigators are still looking into whether the victim had any direct connections to gangs or the drug trade. We have no reason to believe the general public is at risk.”
The RCMP remain on site and have cordoned off the crime scene, a 24-hour car wash, with police tape.
Anyone with information about the assault is asked to contact IHIT at 1-877-551-4448.
