1. Puppet Killer. A made-in-B.C. horror-comedy, Puppet Killer is the only feature during the two-day horror fest (now in its second year). Imagine a cabin-in-the-woods type scenario with Tickle Me Elmo gone bad. Director Lisa Ovies was inspired to make the film while working simultaneously as a casting director on a horror movie and as a producer on a musical with puppets. “Puppet Killer pays homage to all my favourite old school horror films and honours the art of practical effects,” she says. “True horror fans will love the recalls from their favourite films and the actors’ performances are truly brilliant.”
2. Dance with A Demon. The rest of the programming focuses on short films (32) from around the world (9 countries), with a focus on local talent. One example of a Vancouver short is Dance with a Demon, an expressionistic tale about a mother’s struggle with depression that lives up to its title.
3. Helsinki Mansplaining Massacre. From Finland comes this hilarious, unsettling and well-written short about a woman trapped in the countryside with men eager to educate her about her own body.
4. Teen Aged. In this American entry, a teenage werewolf at a masked Halloween party finds that appearances can be deceiving.
5. Dulce Hogar. Montreal’s Gio Olmos gives us this much-travelled (including film festivals in Iceland, New York, and Bogota) short about the residents of a building in a poor Latin American town. Each month, they must pay their rent to Susana the doorkeeper with something more valuable than money. A hint is in the Spanish title.
