Known for its combination of close harmonies, traditional Ukrainian lyrics and melodies and untraditional rhythms, DakhaBrakha has become an international touring sensation. The Ukrainian quartet originated in 2004 at the avant-garde Dakh Centre of Contemporary Art, a central hub for the arts underground in Kiev. Live, they are “full of fun, imagination and artistic precision,” says Joyce Hinton, co-managing director of the Chan. Colourful stage elements and costumes add to the effect as band members play an array of instruments from around the world.

Joel de la Fuente (Amazon’s Man in the High Castle) stars in a solo play that has toured the U.S. and is making its international debut in Vancouver. Directed by Lisa Rothe and written by playwright Jeanne Sakata, Hold These Truths is Gordon Hirabayashi, one of the three people who fought against the forceable removal and mass incarceration of Japanese descendants in America during WWII. During his journey, he fought against the injustices that were placed against his people in the US and continued his efforts as an activist and educator in his final days as a Canadian citizen. A review at artsfuse.org calls the play “a riveting drama” and “a powerful, political and timely one-person show that pulls no punches.”
When: Oct. 21
Where: Vogue Theatre
Tickets: starting at $35 at eventbrite.ca
Kim Petras kicks off her Clarity Tour in Vancouver. The tour is named after her debut full-length, released earlier this year (and called “decadent and deeply silly” in a 7.2 review on Pitchfork). But her latest is Turn Off the Light, a sequel of sorts to an EP she released last year. The album includes the tracks from the EP plus new songs, all with a Halloween theme (sample song titles: There Will be Blood, Death by Sex, and the title track, which features Elvira, Mistress of the Dark). Originally from Cologne, Germany, the 27-year-old pop singer began recording music as a teenager. She has collaborated with a number of artists, including Charli XCX and SOPHIE.
When: Oct. 23-April 5 2020
Where: Bill Reid Gallery

Haida artist Terry-Lynn Williams-Davidson reimagines supernatural figures from Haida tradition using photographic collage, design, and work by Haida artist Robert Davidson. In the tradition of New York conceptual artist Cindy Sherman, Williams-Davidson’s portraits in Out of Concealment feature the artist herself. Besides being a visual artist, she is also a musician, activist, author and lawyer.
When: Oct. 18, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Chilliwack Cultural Centre

Formed in 1977, Doug and the Slugs developed a local following for their theme nights and onstage antics. Unfortunately, co-founder and frontman Doug Bennett died in 2004. Since then the original Slugs, along with vocalist Ted Okos, have resurrected the band’s spirit of fun in concert while performing golden age MTV hits like Too Bad, Who Knows How (to Make Love Stay), and Making It Work.

Where: Pacific Theatre
Tickets: $15.75 at tickets.pacifictheatre.org
Get a jump on Halloween with this new take on the Mary Shelley classic. In this Wireless Wings Radio Ensemble production, Corina Akeson, Matthew Simmons, Diana Squires (pictured) and Tariq Lesli re-imagine the monster fable as an immersive audio drama.
When: Oct. 18
Where: Fox Cabaret
Tickets: $18 at eventbrite.ca
The Lethbridge, Alberta singer/songwriter is on tour for Strange Path, his 11th studio album. The artist makes a bit of a departure on the first single, Strange Attractor, which has a glam-rock feel. Much of the rest of the album is more along the lines of the Stagger we’ve got to know over the last decade-plus, with hard-livin’ (and -dyin’) roots-rock songs like Nobody Alive (Gets Out of Here), Leonard Cohen (is Dead) as well as the upbeat call-to-arms Breaking News.
