Kerry Washington joins Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman in ‘The Prom’

Kerry Washington has been cast in “The Prom”, the third movie from Ryan Murphy (“Eat, Pray, Love”, “American Horror Story”, “Glee”). The film is an adaptation of a musical comedy that has been playing on Broadway since 2018.

“The Prom” — created by Jack Viertel, Chad Beguelin and Bob Martin — tells the story of Emma, an American student who wants to bring her girlfriend to her school’s dance. As her town, Edgewater, is very conservative, the lesbian couple is barred from the party.

Following this, actors from a Broadway musical comedy decide to fight the injustice of Emma’s situation by bringing media attention to the situation. When their show based on Eleanor Roosevelt is panned by the New York Times, they decide to improve their image by supporting a cause.

For the story’s move to the digital screen, Murphy is bringing in a stellar cast. Meryl Streep and James Corden will play Broadway stars Dee Dee Allen and Barry Glickman. Kerry Washington, Nicole Kidman, Awkwafina, Ariana Grande, Keegan-Michael Key and Andrew Rannells round out the cast.
