Israel Adesanya makes another grand entrance — into pound-for-pound rankings

Israel Adesanya didn’t just become a champion on Oct. 6 in Melbourne, Australia. He became a bona fide star — from his choreographed walkout to his energized postfight callout. And his performance in between was even more spectacular. Fittingly, his second-round knockout of middleweight champ Robert Whittaker was witnessed live by more than 57,000 fans, the largest crowd in UFC history.

Adesanya’s big night — along with all of the highlight-reel moments that came before it in his 18-0 pro career — has boosted him into the ESPN pound-for-pound fighter rankings.

The title-winning KO put an exclamation point on an Adesanya-in-Melbourne story that took nearly four years to play out. Back in 2015, the Nigerian who moved to New Zealand in his teens was at Etihad Stadium (now known as Marvel Stadium) not to fight but to witness history. At UFC 193, Adesanya saw Holly Holm wreck the veil of invulnerability that had surrounded Ronda Rousey, knocking her out to become champion. Adesanya saw it happen — but not exactly from cageside.

“I was in the nosebleeds,” he said, “and now I made his nose bleed.”

That was a reference to Whittaker, who had been champ since 2017. In suffering his first loss in 10 fights, he was knocked out of the pound-for-pound top 10. Someone had to make room for Adesanya, who has won all seven of his fights in the UFC.
