A Catholic elementary school teacher has been reprimanded after showing his Grade 5 class a video that left some of the students feeling disturbed and scared.
According to a B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation ruling released on Tuesday, Hani Nabil Naguib Amin Malti was employed by the Catholic Independent Schools of Vancouver Archdiocese when the incident occurred on Jan. 12, 2017.
The ruling states that Malti was teaching a class of Grade 5 students when he showed a seven-minute, “age-inappropriate, graphic, narrated YouTube video about the Crusades wars containing graphic drawings showing violence, persecution and torture.”
“Some students reported being unable to get the images from the film out of their minds, causing them to feel disturbed and scared.”
A week later, the Catholic Independent Schools of Vancouver Archdiocese issued Malti a letter of discipline and suspended him for three days. According to the ruling Malti was also fired the same day “without cause.”
In February, 2017, the school principal reported Malti to the commissioner, then made a second report the following month.
On May 2, 2017, the commissioner proposed a consent resolution agreement with Malti. Then on Aug. 29, 2019, the commissioner issued a citation to Malti.
According to the commissioner, Malti had admitted to professional misconduct as a result of showing the video.
Malti’s Linkedin page states that he holds a Masters of Education from Simon Fraser University and presently teaches Grade 5 at the Blessed Sacrament School in Vancouver. Malti holds a valid Professional Certificate of Qualification issued by the Teacher Regulation Branch.
