Vancouver’s 6th annual Halloween Parade and Expo will take over Downtown Vancouver this weekend, with spooky family fun for all.

More than 100,000 visitors are expected over the course of the weekend to enjoy the parade and expo, inspired by comics, anime, video games and mythological tales. And be warned, no blood and gore is permitted, so not only is the weekend a family friendly affair, it’s also a scaredy-cat-friendly event.

“We are excited to present astonishing arts and performances to kick off a family friendly Halloween celebration for the … public,” said Raymond He, Vancouver International Halloween Festival Society director, in a statement.

The Halloween Expo will take place from Friday, Oct. 11, to Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Vancouver Art Gallery’s north plaza and UBC Robson Square’s indoor exhibition space. Performances at VAG’s north plaza take place from 4-7 p.m. on Friday and from noon-7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday; UBC Robson Square will be open from noon-7 p.m.

Cosplayers will show off their intricately handcrafted outfits, while anime dance groups Zeús LoveLive, video game band Runaway Four, missingNo, fairy tale dancer Karen Flamenco and comedy team The Fictionals will provide the entertainment.

The Halloween Parade begins at 11 a.m. on Sunday, starting from Howe and Drake streets, before heading north toward Smithe Street, where it turns onto Granville Street and finishes back at Drake.

More than 1,000 parade performers from 20 different groups will show off their best costume ideas during the 10-block parade. Spectators can expect to see the Star Wars 501st Legion, Ghostbusters of B.C., superheroes and a number of marching bands and dancers.

To allow for the parade to take place, northbound lanes on the Granville Street Bridge will be partly closed from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Sunday, with drivers being urged to take Burrard or Cambie streets instead into Downtown Vancouver.
