COOLER days are expected as the southwest monsoon or habagat season has ended and the climate has shifted to the northeast monsoon or amihan, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) announced.

“Recent observations and analysis showed that general wind pattern has shifted from southwesterly to easterly. Moreover, the strengthening of high pressure systems over the Asian continent has led to the gradual changing of the season,” Pagasa Administrator Vicente Malano said in a statement.

Pagasa weather specialist Benison Estareja said that with the climate transitioning to amihan, the prevalence of rains would shift from the western to the eastern section of Luzon and Visayas.

Generally mas kokonti ang paulan sa kapag amihan season. Yung associated na rains ay light rains lang (In general, there are less rains during the amihan season. Associated rains are only light),” Estareja said.

Estareja said that as far as temperature was concerned “since yung habagat, medyo warm pa rin siya dahil galing siya sa equator. Yun namang northeast monsoon, nanggagaling dito either sa mainland [region] or dito sa may North Pacific, kaya yung hangin, mas malamig (since the habagat, temperature is warm because wind comes form the equator. During the northeast monsoon, wind comes from either the mainland region or the North Pacific, hence it’s colder).”

Pagasa expects from 2 to 3 tropical cyclones to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility in October. Estareja said that typhoon Hagibis, last spotted at 2,420 kilometers east of Central Luzon, has low chances of entering the country. DIVINA NOVA JOY DELA CRUZ
