SEN. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go has assured Filipinos that there was nothing to worry regarding the health condition of President Rodrigo Duterte.
“Nothing serious about it as it has not progressed at localized lang po ito according to his doctor,” said Go who accompanied the President in his five-day visit to Russia.
President Duterte revealed during his speech before the Filipino community in Russia late Saturday that he has an autoimmune disease called myasthenia gravis.
The President said the illness was a result of a nerve malfunction and that he acquired it from his grandfather.
Aside from the President’s one eye appearing to be smaller than usual, myasthenia gravis also causes muscle weakness as well as blurred vision.
“Yes, kaya napapansin niyo medyo maliit ‘yung isang mata niya paminsan (Yes, you will notice that sometimes one of the President’s eyes is smaller than the other one),” Go said.
The popular leader, 74, is known for his busy schedule and for giving long speeches, often several a day. Several disappearances from public view in the past fueled rumors his health was in decline. The government has repeatedly denied that.
Duterte’s latest comments could raise more questions about the state of his health. JAVIER JOE ISMAEL
