1. Opening Night Gala. This is the 34th year for Vancouver Fashion Week, which brings in talent from around the globe while supporting Canadian designers, new talent and local lines. For the opening gala (Oct. 7 at 5 p.m.), designers showcase one design from their latest collection, and a highlight reel gives glimpses into the collections to be presented throughout the week.

2. First-timers. Designers new to VFW include DAHNA, a label that modernizes traditional Korean clothing styles, and Ellen Wise Couture, which specializes in elegant, heirloom creations made in California. Other international newcomers include PAINTERS (Korea), Eva Rorandelli (Italy), Mónica The Label (Australia), Feelomena (Italy), Ellen Wise Couture and Claire Elisabeth (U.S.).

3. Eco-friendly. Eco-friendly designers at this season’s show include CHIDO (New Zealand) and Aubrey Chayson (Australia). The latter’s 100 per cent silk garments are ethically sourced and made.

4. Local talent. Local designers include Lesley Senko, whose spring/summer line is handmade in the city using ethical and sustainable materials and practices. Another local firm, Ay Lelum is headed by a sister duo that received the 2018 Indigenous Business of the Year Award for their second-generation Coast Salish design house. They create wearable looks inspired by traditional art by their brother and father. With AKOYA Swim, East Vancouver designer Olivia Bickerstaff specializes in long-lasting, eco-friendly swimsuits that fit a diverse array of body shapes and sizes.

5. Global Fashion Collective. With this initiative, VFW helps designers get their work into fashion capitals like New York, Tokyo, and Paris.
