The “King of Beers” has crowned Vancouver’s C.J. Zizzari as the king of hockey fandom.
Last month Budweiser put out the call to Canada’s biggest hockey fans to apply — via video submissions — for the “job” of Chief Hockey Officer.
Zizzari, an avid Canucks fan, beat out more than 1,000 other candidates to claim the fancy made-up title along with $50,000 and tickets to every Canucks game, home and away, for himself and three friends.
With delicate prose describing one of the world’s most combustible games, Zizzari’s winning submission drips with sentimentality and reverence for his favourite sport.
“Hockey is a sport but it is also an instrument to bring people together,” Zizzari says in his video voice over. “Our love of the game wasn’t cemented with the hits or the goals but in the front yards with the plastic nets and on the couches with those we care about.”
“(Hockey has) been there for me since before I can remember and truthfully the game was my first real friend. It’s been there for me in the good and the bad moments of not just my life but all of our lives,” Zizzari said.
