When it comes to organizing our homes, there is likely no magic trick or innovative storage solution that we haven’t already thought of, says Jing Xia of Vancouver retailer Room in Order, which specializes in functional household items that help keep chaos at bay. Instead, says Xia, it’s best to think about the design of the items we use every day.
“It is always interesting to see that consistently our best-selling items are basics that have been designed with function and esthetics in mind. We get excited about the mundane or often-overlooked products that complete a room and make a space function correctly. Notably, items such as shoe racks, umbrellas stands, coat hooks, etc.,” he says.
Certainly Marie Kondo and her KonMari method have people thinking a lot more about home organization, says Xia, and he agrees that clearing out your home — decluttering an purging — is the best place to start if you’re wanting to better organize it.
There has been an increasing demand for items that help people organize, store and charge personal tech accessories, says Xia, and in their line of work they do see examples of home organization taken to the next level.
Space is a luxury and one we’re losing with apartment living the new norm for many. However, one benefit of living in a smaller space is that it forces you to edit down your belongings. There are also now a lot more items on the market designed to be modular, to move from room to room with ease, and to be dual purpose, like an ottoman that offers storage and seating.
If you do live in a space that has limited storage, choosing furniture that has built-in storage is a good way to go (think beds with large drawers, or sofas with under cushion storage) or platform beds and sofas that allow storage boxes to be rolled under them.
The general consensus from interior designers is that people tend to feel overwhelmed in their homes when there is a lot of visual clutter, so choose furniture that allows you to hide what you’re storing behind a door or under a lid.
Keeping floor space clear is also key, say interior designers, so storage solutions that can be hung from the ceiling or walls are ideal. In small bathrooms, there are shower curtains that offer storage. And opting for clear plastic containers to store your belongings are better than those you can’t see into, so things don’t disappear “into never never land,” says interior designer Angela Robinson.
