Fall is one of the most fun seasons to shop for. Mainly because the pieces, while seasonal, can last in your wardrobe for years (and years!) to come.
With an eye on timeless pieces, we’ve hand-picked 10 wardrobe MVPs — that’s most valuable pieces — to pick up this season. From cool coats to luxe cashmere scarves — here are our top styles to shop for this fall.
We’re not going to say this is a shopping list for the ultimate fall fashion wardrobe. But, if someone were to use it as that … well, we wouldn’t complain.
Chic topper
A good coat is the foundation of any fall/winter wardrobe. And, this cold-weather season, we’re crushing on a belted, wool coat like this stylish option from the Montreal-based retailer Le Chateau. The length is perfect for keeping the winter chill at bay, while the belted waist is sure to reduce the overall appearance of bulk. But it’s the warm, nutty hue that really has us excited about this piece. Deeper than a camel shade, the colour — we’re dubbing it ‘nutmeg’ — has us dreaming of pumpkin spice latte season.

Wrapped up
Add a dose of luxe to every outfit this fall/winter season with a cashmere knit scarf like this one from CHANEL. The design features an eye-catching red-and-black check print, with the iconic double Cs in a creamy cashmere knit. While it may be a bit too warm for early fall, it’s sure to become a regular outfit fixture once winter’s chill settles in.

Lucky links
The perfect amount of chunky without being too oversized, this 10-karat, made-in-Italy gold curb chain from the Vancouver-based brand Melanie Auld is at the top of our fall wish list. Wear it layered with other gold necklaces such as fine chains and coin-bearing pendant necklaces for a luxe layered look. If you pick one up, prepare to never want to take it off.

Prairie companion
Think a floral dress is only for spring? Think again. A midi-length floral dress like this Michael Kors Woodland-Print Georgette Shirtdress can easily transition from summer to fall (and back again!) with the addition of seasonally appropriate accessories. We’re dreaming of wearing it with slouchy boots and a stylish jacket. Bonus points for adding a slim-fitting turtleneck top underneath.

Timeless tagalong
Move over ’80s and ’90s throwbacks, we’re ready to head back to the ’50s. At least when it comes to this drop-dead gorgeous Gucci bag. The style revival, which is referred to by the Italian fashion brand as the 1955 Horsebit Bag, features a structured shape and cross-body strap, plus signature Gucci details such as the monogram canvas and the horse-bit detail on the front. It’s sure to become a beloved handbag for this season — as well as many more to come.

Borrowed from Dad
Sure, skinny jeans have long proven that they’re here to stay. But, if you really want to step out in style this season, consider picking up a pair of baby blues that are a bit looser and more lived-in. These editor-approved Levi’s Dad Jeans are slouchy in all the right places, without looking like you literally stepped out in dear old dad’s denim castoffs.

Bold boots
Stomp into the season in style with a pair of chunky-soled boots like these Dr. Martens Black 1460 Bex Platform Boots. The re-boot (sorry, I had to) of the classic Dr. Martens silhouettes sees the lace-up style get a boost thanks to a platform sole. In addition to adding an edgy appeal to all the season’s outfits, the extra height is sure to keep you safe from the guaranteed puddles. See you later, wet feet.

Sweet sweater
Whether you’re on the hunt for the perfect seasonal sweater to replace last year’s much-loved (but now very ragged) iteration, or you’re simply looking to bulk up the sweater collection you currently have at home, consider adding a slightly oversized style in a natural hue like this knit turtleneck from H&M to your fall fashion repertoire. The soft brown shade is warm and inviting. So, basically, it’s the sweater version of a perfect cup of coffee or hot cocoa.

Print play
Plaid is sure to have a big ‘moment’ this fall, but if you’re willing to walk on the wild side, opt for a bold animal-print piece like this Babaton Leopard Sip Skirt. Plus, the style is the ultimate item for a desk-to-after-work drinks moment. We love a slinky skirt worn with a cosy knit sweater for a play on proportions and texture. Simply change out your daytime footwear for a chic pair of heels and you’ll be ready for happy hour in no time.

Haute hat
Nix the chance of bad hair days by adding a nice new toque to your collection. While you may not need to wear it much until winter fully arrives, in the meantime, a style like this oatmeal-hued Canada Goose Chunky Wool Beanie provides the perfect way to protect the day’s ‘do from all those rain showers that somehow didn’t show up on your phone’s weather app. Again.
