TROPICAL depression “Nimfa” continued to move slowly toward Batanes on Wednesday and while it was not expected to make landfall, it would enhance the southwest monsoon over parts of Luzon and the Visayas, the state-run weather bureau said.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its 4 p.m. bulletin that Nimfa was located 745 kilometers east-northeast of Basco, Batanes with maximum winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center.
Weather Specialist Anna Clauren said in a press briefing, however, that chances of landfall were low and because of its slow movement, it may leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Saturday.
Clauren said that in the next 24 hours, low to moderate rains or at times sudden heavy rains were expected in Pangasinan, Palawan, Mindoro, and a large part of Central Luzon.
“Kaya patuloy nating pinapayuhan ‘yung ating mga kababayan na nakatira sa mababa at bulubunduking lugar na mag-ingat po sila dahil posible ang mga pagbaha at pagguho ng lupa,” she said.
(So we advise those residing in low-lying or mountainous areas to be careful because of the possibility of floods and landslides.)
Cloudy skies with scattered light to moderate rains with lightning and thunder are expected over Metro Manila, the Bicol region, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon provinces), and the rest of Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan), she said.
She added that because of the trough of “Nimfa”, the Cagayan Valley region, the Cordillera Administrative Region, and the rest of Ilocos would experience cloudy skies with light to moderate to at times heavy rains.
Earlier on Wednesday, Pagasa said it was monitoring a low pressure area (LPA) in the vicinity of Mayantoc, Tarlac which amy merge with Nimfa within 48 hours. REINA C. TOLENTINO, FRANZ EMBUDO
