When talking about Patrick Mahomes, the professional football player’s hair likely doesn’t come up as one of the top five topics of the conversation. Or, heck, maybe not even the top 20.
But, when Postmedia News was approached with the opportunity to chat with the star quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, that’s exactly what was on offer. After all, the 23-year-old is a new spokesperson for the haircare line Head & Shoulders, so given that context, the topic of tresses makes complete sense.
The new gig sees Mahomes open up about his curly ‘do, as well as positions him alongside retired NFL star Troy Polamalu (known for his trademark lengthy locks) in the latest campaign.
And, as it turns out, he’s pretty darn happy about it.
Q. Firstly, how would you describe your personal style — in three words or less?
A. Just. Swaggy. Enough.
Q. As a professional athlete that’s celebrated for your on-field expertise, would you ever imagine you’d sign on with a haircare brand rather than, say, an athletics offering?
A. It was actually one of the first conversations I ever had with my now marketing manager. When she asked me my rookie season what kind of commercial I envisioned myself in, I told her I had always been a fan of the Head & Shoulders commercials with Troy Polamalu, so it was pretty sweet to see it come full circle.
Q. What was it like sharing the spotlight with fellow campaign star Troy Polamalu?
A. It was awesome. He has been a part of the Head & Shoulders family for years and he was a big reason I loved their commercials so much … so it was special to now be in a campaign together.
Q. He has a pretty impressive head of hair. Did you score any haircare tips and tricks from him at all?
A. His hair is really impressive. I don’t think I could manage all of that hair, but he has his routine down to a T.
Q. Speaking of haircare, what’s your usual routine like? Do you use many products to get your trademark style?
A. I don’t use a ton of product. Pretty much just shower, H&S and go. Helmet hair is a real thing, though, so we have to save any helmet shots for the END of any photo shoots or it’s game over.
Q. Lastly, any final words on the big debate: offence vs. defence?
A. Always offence (laughs).
