VICTORIA — The University of Victoria says counselling services are open today for students seeking help after a deadly bus crash on Friday killed two of their peers.

The university says in a statement that 45 students and two teaching assistants were aboard the bus on their way to Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre when it went off a gravel road and down an embankment about 40 kilometres from Port Alberni on Vancouver Island.

Two students died on the scene and 17 others were transported to hospital in varying conditions.

The university says its counsellors and other staff met with students and their families Saturday afternoon, and counselling services are open today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the University Centre for students looking for support.

The school says it is not disclosing personal information about the students due to privacy provisions and out of respect.

The RCMP is continuing its investigation into the cause of the accident.
