Burnaby Hospital will get a $1.3-billion redevelopment, including two new patient-care towers, the B.C. government announced on Tuesday.

Almost every part of the aging hospital, which has been dogged by a high rate of C. difficile infections, is slated for reconstruction of replacement.

The first of two patient-care building will have 78 beds in six storeys, along with a mental health and substance use inpatient unit, and a new maternity ward. Construction on the first tower will begin in 2021 and is expected to wrap up in 2023.

The second tower will offer 160 new beds with a state-of-the-art cancer treatment centre. Construction will begin in 2024 and open in 2027.

Other updates will include a larger emergency department, increasing the number of treatment bays, adding a new medical device reprocessing unit, four new operating rooms and 18 new pre- and post-operative spaces. These updates will be open in 2024.

“Burnaby is growing rapidly, and the hospital needs to be upgraded and modernized to keep up. This significant investment will help deliver the health care people in Burnaby need in world-class facilities,” Premier John Horgan said.

“As Burnaby continues to grow, our health care needs have changed and grown, too,” Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley said in a statement.

“Burnaby Hospital staff provide top-notch care. Now we will have the facility to match the people. Building on recent urgent and primary care investments in Burnaby, the hospital will help deliver health care in the best way possible.”
