“LIWAYWAY” (international name “Lingling”) intensified into a severe tropical storm on Tuesday, the state-run weather bureau said.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) last spotted Liwayway at 250 kilometers east-northeast of Calayan, Cagayan. It gained strength, packing maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 115 kph. It was moving north-northwest and slowed down from 20 kph to 10 kph.
Pagasa weather specialist Jun Galang said Liwayway, the 12th tropical cyclone to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) was unlikely to make landfall in any part of the country. It was expected to exit PAR on Wednesday evening or Thursday early morning.
Galang also said that Liwayway continued to enhance the southwest monsoon and was affecting the western parts of Luzon and Visayas.
Signal No. 1 remained in Batanes. A gale warning was raised over the seaboards of most parts of Luzon because of the combined effects of Liwayway and the southwest monsoon.
These areas are Batanes, Calayan and Babuyan Islands, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Isabela, La Union, Pangasinan, Aurora, Zambales, Bataan, Camarines Provinces, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Quezon including Polilio Island, Palawan, Cavite, Batangas, Mindoro Provinces, Palawan, Marinduque, Romblon, Masbate, and Masbate, including Ticao and Burias Islands. Pagasa advised small fishing vessels against venturing out into these areas and those where alerts have been raised.
On Tuesday, Liwayway was expected to bring light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains over Apayao, Cagayan, including Babuyan Islands, and Batanes. The southwest monsoon will also bring scattered light to moderate rains with at times heavy rain showers over Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), Mimaropa (Occidental and Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), northern portions of Palawan, including Calamian Islands, Mindoro Provinces, and rest of Cordillera Administrative Region. Pagasa advised residents in these areas to remain vigilant against possible flash floods and landslides. DIVINA NOVA JOY DELA CRUZ
