A 33-year-old woman was punched and her 29-year-old boyfriend was stabbed during a confrontation over cigarettes outside a Saanich gas station early Thursday morning.
Saanich police say the couple had just bought cigarettes at Shell station around 1 a.m. when they were approached by an unknown man who asked them for a smoke.
When they refused, police say an argument ensued and the suspect punched the woman in the face. Her boyfriend was stabbed when he stepped in to stop the assault.
“Saanich Police officers were quickly on the scene and located the injured man and woman nearby at the Red Lion Inn,” Saanich police said in a release. “The man was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, where he remains. The woman suffered minor injuries which did not require hospitalization.”
A 25-year-old man was arrested in the Shell parking lot.
The man, whose name was not released, remains in police custody and is expected to be in court on Thursday. Police are recommending he be charged with aggravated assault, assault and robbery.
