An “extensive” power failure in the Gastown area has police warning drivers to use caution at dimmed intersections.

The failure, which is due to planned B.C. Hydro work in the area, extends from Abbott to Main streets, and from Powell to Hastings streets.

About 145 customers are affected, including a number of intersection lights.

Drivers should use four-way-stop procedures at intersections where traffic lights aren’t working. The procedure dictates that the first driver to reach the four-way intersection and stop is the first vehicle to proceed through the intersection. If two vehicles arrive at the same time, drivers must yield to the driver on their right.

The failure began around 7:45 a.m. and is expected to wrap up around 6 p.m.
