Choosing the right sofa is an entirely personal decision. Apart from your bed, it’s one of the most used pieces of furniture in your home and is often front and centre when it comes to your home decor, so it’s important you like it.
Here’s a look at what’s currently trending in sofa design, and some things worth considering before making one of the larger furniture purchases for your home.
Furniture trends often reflect societal trends, and this is definitely the case with the rise in popularity of sofa beds, says Alan Wilson, founder of Vancouver’s Industrial Revolution, the family-owned modern furniture store that has been operating for almost 40 years. As people are moving into smaller spaces and demanding more from every room in their homes, multi-functional pieces like sleeper sofas are becoming more and more popular.
Collections like the Luonto sleeper sofas, made in Finland, also reflect the demand for more environmentally sustainable brands, Wilson says. These sofas are custom-made by Scandinavian craftsmen.
“This hand-made approach creates minimal waste and emissions and hardly consumes any energy or water. Furthermore, the wood waste that is created is reused to heat the production facilities and the local community, and any additional scrap waste is donated to local artisans,” he says.
