The appropriations committee of the House of Representatives approved on Tuesday the proposed P673-million budget of the Office of the Vice President (OVP) for 2020.
The allocation is lower than the P684.2 million sought by the OVP, but higher than the P547.6 million allocation for 2019.
The appropriations panel headed by Davao City Third District Rep. Isidro Ungab discussed and passed the OVP budget in just 20 minutes.
Philip Dy, the vice president’s chief of staff, thanked the House for passing the budget to be used for anti-poverty projects, particularly Angat Buhay, the flagship project of Robredo, which provides help for the poor.
Angat Buhay covers 193 local government units nationwide.
“Sa ngayon naman, kami ay nagpapasalamat dahil iyong aming nirekomenda na budget ay more or less naibigay naman. Kung ikukumpara iyong pinropose doon sa nirekomenda ng DBM (Department of Budget and Management), hindi naman naging masyadong malayo iyong naging pagitan (We are still grateful because what we have requested was somehow given. If we were to compare it with the DBM’s recommendation, the gap is not that big),” said Dy.
He added that Robredo wanted to focus on her Angat Buhay program which started in 2016.
Under Robredo’s term, the OVP had partnered with more than 321 private organizations, mobilizing more than P343 million worth of resources that benefited around 400,000 families
It was also able to provide P598 million worth of medical assistance to over 45,842 individuals, in partnership with the private sector.
