HE may have skipped National Heroes’ Day rites, but President Rodrigo Duterte paid tribute to heroes on Monday night at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani in Taguig City.
Photos released by Malacañang on Tuesday showed Duterte lighting candles in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Duterte, who has been known to make late-night visits and inspections, was supposed to lead the National Heroes Day celebration at the
Libingan ng mga Bayani on Monday, but decided to skip it because he was “not feeling well,” according to Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong”
Go.
House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano represented the President in the event.
Also on Monday night, Duterte posthumously conferred the Order of Lapu-Lapu, Rank of Kalasag on Second Lt. Geroe Jade Nicor when he visited the latter’s wake at the mortuary of the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
Nicor was killed in a clash with the New People’s Army in Calbayog City, Samar on August 23. Another soldier, Army Cpl. Joelito Canico, was also slain in the firefight.
