1. Kimmortal. Earlier this year, queer Filipinx artist-emcee Kimmortal released her second full-length album, X Marks the Swirl, to acclaim, including inclusion on this year’s Polaris Music Prize Long List. She is one of at least eight local acts performing at this year’s annual Victory Square Block Party, presented by CiTR, Discorder Magazine, and the Music Waste Festival.
2. Biawanna. The singer/songwriter has played in various bands over the years and has so far released eight singles under the Biawanna moniker. Tracks include Partner in Crime, which the RnB/pop artist says was written “after thinking about my social anxiety and how people can sometimes expect you to be the ‘life of the party’ …” Lyrical inspirations include Spice Girls’ 1996 hit Wannabe, as well as The Weeknd, Billie Eilish and Syd from The internet.
3. Luvgoon. This newly-formed four-piece synth-pop band counts among its influences the late seventies Welsh post-punk band Young Marble Giants and contemporary Manchester duo Virginia Wing. They’ll be playing songs from their recent 7” single (hear it at luvgoon.bandcamp.com), out on local label Kingfisher Bluez.
4. Sunrise Social. Featuring members of local bands Apollo Ghosts and Japandroids, Sunrise Social features indie-pop songs by Robbie Nall. They recorded their album Saint Helena in 2017 on Gabriola Island and released it earlier this year.
5. Party in the park. Besides music, this year’s Victory Square Block Party includes food vendors and a raffle with prizes from local businesses. Proceeds go towards Megaphone, Vancouver’s street magazine sold by homeless and low-income vendors.
