2019 BPinoy National Finals fires off in Palawan

PUERTO PRINSESA CITY, Palawan: The 2019 Batang Pinoy National Finals begins today at the Ramon Mitra Sports Complex in Puerto Prinsesa City, Palawan.
Over 5,000 athletes from all over the country will test their mettle in 31 sports among them centerpiece athletics, swimming, archery, arnis, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, dancesport, chess, futsal, karatedo, lawn tennis, pencak silat, sepak takraw, softball, table tennis, taekwondo as well as indoor and beach volleyball.
Other events with no qualifying phase, namely cycling, gymnastics, judo, billiards, muaythai, rugby football, triathlon, soft tennis, weightlifting, wrestling, and wushu will also hold their championship round in Puerto Princesa.
“It’s all systems go for the National Finals of the Batang Pinoy and we’re ready for the growing number of delegates that will take part in the games,” said lawyer Guillermo Iroy Jr., Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) deputy executive and Batang Pinoy project director.
Perennial champion Baguio will defend its crown, which it won last year when it hosted the event.
Challenging Baguio are Laguna that topped the Luzon leg held in Ilagan City, Isabela early this year, and traditional powerhouse National Capital Region.
Berths in the national team that is set to compete in the Children of Asia Games in Russia next year await the top finishers in this week-long, multi-sports meet forregular students and out-of-school youth, 14 years old and below.
“The worthiest performers here will get the chance to represent the national team to the Children of Asia Games,” said Iroy.
The PSC, during the event will hand over P18M worth of sports equipment to local government units with top-performing sports development programs.
Cash subsidies will also be given to deserving BPinoy athletes.
The PSC has partnered with Milo in the staging of this year’s national finals.
