Abbotsford kids sad after pet snake stolen

Two Abbotsford children are heartbroken after their pet corn snake was stolen while the family was away.
According to the Abbotsford Police Department, some time on either August 8 or 9 the home of Kristie Johnson and Chris Rhodes in the Clearbrook neighbourhood was broken into and a 20-gallon tank with a small eight-month old corn snake was stolen.
Johnson told Postmedia News that the family had purchased the pet a few months ago from an exhibition in Abbotsford and that it was cared for by her two children, aged six and eight.
“Telling our kids their pet snake had been stolen was heartbreaking,” she said.
The snake, called Maiz, was the family’s first pet who has special dietary needs.
“Those who do not know how to help her may wind up hurting her,” said Johnson, adding it would have taken two people to carry out the tank and snake.
Corn snakes are constrictors that do not generally bite of grow very large so are often kept as pets. They are not on the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Sustainability’s prohibited reptiles list.
