Looking to get out and about in Vancouver to take advantage of the last few weeks of summer? While also enjoying a pint of craft beer? You’re in luck.
These maps provide a couple of options to explore the city’s craft beer scene on your own time — and with your own bike.
The maps show the shortest routes to bike to every brewery in each of Vancouver’s craft beer neighbourhoods. To find the shortest route, a genetic algorithm — commonly used in machine learning to solve optimization problems — compared thousands of options looking for the quickest trip.
Happy tasting!
The Brewery Creek tour runs 3.6 kilometres and includes some of Vancouver’s top ranking breweries according to RateBeer.com. It starts off at the top-rated Brassneck Brewery, and loops around to the Main Street and Red Truck breweries before heading back toward Ontario street, finishing on a high-note at 33 Acres, which holds the third spot on the RateBeer list.
At 7.4 kilometres and 12 breweries, this east Van route might need the whole afternoon. Starting all the Powell Brewery, it’s hooks west towards the Strathcona Beer Company, then south to Strange Fellows. Finish off at Storm Brewing, which takes second place on RateBeer‘s list.
Brewery names and locations were collected from RateBeer.com. Images are from the official Instagram accounts for each brewery. Cycling routes and distances were calculated using Google’s Distance Matrix API. The routes were processed using a genetic algorithm to determine the shortest route of travel between all locations. Some breweries were excluded due to their distance from other locations.
