A low pressure area (LPA) that has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) has developed into a tropical depression and named “Ineng,” the state-run weather bureau said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) last spotted Ineng at 975 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes. It was moving in a northward direction at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour (kph), carrying maximum sustained winds of 55 kph and gustiness of 70 kph.

Pagasa weather specialist Meno Mendoza said that Ineng, the 9th tropical cyclone to enter the country, was expected to intensify into a tropical storm within the next 12 to 24 hours. It was, however, not likely to make landfall in any part of the country.

On Wednesday, the trough of Ineng was bringing cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms over Visayas, Mimaropa (Occidental and Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), Bicol Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, Bangsamoro, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, and Davao Region.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon was affecting Batanes and the Babuyan Group of Islands.
