Baguio’s experiment with Session Road begins

BAGUIO CITY—The city government on Sunday (Aug. 18) closed parts of the city’s most famous thoroughfare to vehicular traffic in a bid to “pedestriainize” it and reduce emissions.
Mayor Benjamin Magalong has recently signed an ordinance approving the partial closure of Session Road every Sunday for 6 months to help reduce air pollution and encourage people to walk.
Traffic enforcers were deployed to key areas along Session Road for the experimental traffic scheme.
Under the experiment, the Session Road’s uphill lane in front of the Development Bank of the Philippines up to the last pedestrian lane in front of the Baguio Post Office will be closed to vehicular traffic from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. every Sunday.
However, Upper and Lower Mabini Streets toward Harrison Road will remain open to vehicular traffic to serve as an alternate route for motorists who want to move around the central business district area. Inquirer Northern Luzon/TSB
