An early-season snowstorm is expected to wallop parts of Northern B.C. this weekend, with up to 30 centimetres of snow expected in some areas.

Environment and Climate Change Canada on Saturday posted a snowfall warning for Fort Nelson and Muncho Lake Park, saying that a long period of snowfall will blanket part of the Alaska Highway beginning late Saturday.

The agency says an unseasonably cold arctic airmass will descend upon Northern B.C. beginning late Saturday, with rain changing to heavy snow in the evening as temperatures approach the freezing mark.

Significant snowfall accumulations of 20 to 30 centimetres are anticipated overnight through Sunday at higher elevations of the Alaska Highway between Fort Nelson and Watson Lake and to the south of Fort Nelson.

It’s unlikely that the city of Fort Nelson will see much snow, however, because any snow that does fall will be too wet, the agency said. The heavy snow is forecast to end by Monday morning.

The agency is advising people not to travel. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Heavy snowfall accumulation may cause tree branches to break.
