The B.C. government is looking for some new pot products to sell when non-medical munchies become legal later this year.

Recreational cannabis was legalized last year in Canada, but only the dried plant variety.

On Oct. 17, new federal regulations will allow the sale of cannabis edibles, beverages, creams, vape pens, oils and extracts.

Single-serving products will be limited to 10 milligrams of THC, the psychoactive drug in cannabis. Illegally sold candies and cookies often contain 50 or 60 milligrams of THC a piece, prompting some marijuana advocates to argue the government is being too strict.

The federal government hasn’t been that clear about what goodies will be available in October, but has said the products and marketing cannot appeal to youth. So, for example, cannabis-infused gummy bears are probably out. Licensed producers also can’t mix booze and THC in one product.

The B.C. government’s product call is to the more than 30 licensed producers in Canada, and will open at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Licensed processors must provide Health Canada with notice at least 60 days before making a new cannabis product available, so the products won’t be on the shelves until December.

The government says there will be a limited selection, with new products appearing gradually in legal stores.
