A 23-year-old Surrey man is facing a slew of charges after two Delta Police officers were injured – one suffering significant head injuries – during a violent incident at Watershed Park on Saturday.
Delta police were called to the park at 9 a.m. after receiving a report of a suspicious man in the area.
The first officer on the scene was confronted by a man who was hurling rocks at his cruiser.
Delta police say when the officer exited his car to “de-escalate the situation” the man ran from him and jumped into the driver’s seat of the police vehicle, which luckily did not have the keys in it at this time.
“The officer continued to speak with the man in an effort to de-escalate the incident, but the man became more agitated,” Delta police said in a statement.
The officer was punched in the face when he tried to handcuff the man, who then proceeded to beat the officer over the head with the handcuffs.
Delta police Supt. Harj Sidhu says the officer received 23 stitches and staples to close five separate lacerations to his face and head,
Despite serious face and head wounds, the officer managed to hold the man in the vehicle until backup arrived.
Another officer was bit on the hand during the ensuing arrest.
Kyle Muttu Goundar of Surrey is facing four charges including assault causing bodily harm, assaulting a peace officer, uttering a threat to cause death or bodily harm, and resisting a peace officer.
Delta police say he is currently being held for psychiatric assessment.
