The Department of Environment and Natural Resources pioneered the Heritage Tree Program in 2009. A heritage tree is any healthy native or endemic, exotic, rare, threatened and endangered species, with a minimum girth or circumference of 100 centimeters. The heritage trees need to be at least 50 years old and have historical, cultural or aesthetic value. At present, there are 29 heritage trees in Metro Manila, spread out over nine cities and one municipality. Most can be found in Quezon City and Manila. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
