Duterte visits quake-hit Batanes

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte will visit Batanes this Sunday morning, Malacanang said, a day after the island was struck by an earthquake that killed at least nine people and injured 60 others.
In a message to reporters, Palace spokesman Salvador Panelo said Duterte will leave for Batanes from Davao at 10:30 a.m.
“The President is expected to visit the people of Batanes today, assess the extent of damage in the province and initiate the rebuilding of one of the most treasured destinations of the country,” Panelo said in a statement.
Twin earthquakes with respective magnitudes of 5.4 and 5.9 hit Itbayat and Basco in Batanes early Saturday morning.
Panelo said government agencies have been tapped to render immediate assistance to those affected.
Panelo also condoled with the families of those who died from the quake.
“The Palace offers its deep condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones during the earthquakes that hit Batanes. We send our sincerest prayers for the fast and speedy recovery of those who were injured,” he said.
