Manny Pacquiao’s long-time publicist Fred Sternburg said that retired American pro boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. was just envious of the attention the Filipino ring icon is getting after his victory with Keith Thurman.

Pacquiao won via split decision against the thrash talking Thurman in the World Boxing Association super welterweight championship on Saturday (US time) at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.

“In my opinion, Floyd is frustrated that Manny has not only maintained his relevance in boxing, but Floyd has lost his relevance. There was no reaction when he entered the arena. The MGM Grand Garden Arena was Manny’s house on Saturday night. I think that frustration boiled over into those Instagrams he posted,” Sternburg told The Manila Times.

Two days after Pacquiao’s victory, Mayweather posted the following words on Instagrams: “Bottom line, I make more money than you; I beat you, then I signed you! I was only at your fight supervising you, my employee, as any real BOSS would do.”

An obviously irked Pacquiao replied also via Instagram, “Excuse me Floyd, your name has not been on any of my PBC contracts. But if you would like to be on the next one, I will have one drawn up and sent to you.”

Mayweather, who retired from boxing four years ago said he has no interest in a rematch against Pacman. But he fought in two exhibition matches, first against mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor whom he beat via unanimous decision on August 26, 2017, and second against Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa whom he floored thrice in December last year in Japan

But Sternburg believes that it would be hard for the 42-year-old Mayweather to keep up with Pacquiao’s incredible shape at 40.

“Floyd has not had a real fight since 2015. Manny has had three world championship fights in the past 12 months. In my opinion, at his age, Floyd cannot come back from that kind of inactivity and face Manny,” said Sternburg.

Sternburg said boxing fans are awaiting Mayweather’s latest pronouncement.

“He has been pretty quiet since Manny put him in his place on Instagram.”
