Nazareth School of National University lived up to its billing and smothered host Indonesia, 100-51, to retain the crown in the 2019 ASEAN School Games on Tuesday at the GOR Sahabat in Semarang, Indonesia.
Inspired by their 87-47 thumping of the same squad in the preliminaries over the weekend, the Nationals wasted no time in disposing of the Indons to win the gold medal for the second straight year.
Terrence Fortea starred anew for the Bullpups as he drained 32 points in an 11-of-18 shooting from the field despite seeing action for only 23 minutes.
Gerry Abadiano also shone for the PH team with 11 points spiked by three triples, while guard Ernest Felicilda finally made his presence felt by posting 13 points, three rebounds and seven assists.
The Nationals overpowered their rivals throughout, winning by an average margin of 48 points. Their other victory came at the expense of Malaysia, 118-62.
The team is supported by Freego and Oriental Group of Companies.
It was a double celebration for NU as its girls squad outlasted Thailand, 84-72 for the gold medal.
Kristine Cayabyab and Angelica Marie Surada led the team with 30 and 14 points, respectively.
NU, however, settled for silver in girls volleyball after losing to perennial champion Thailand, 20-25, 29-31, 25-19, 25-18, 15-9.
Their counterpart, managed to claim the bronze after losing their semifinal duel with Thailand, 21-25, 20-25, 14-25.
In all, the Philippines brought home four gold, 7 silver and 22 bronze medals.
Host Indonesia secured the top spot with 43 gold, 34 silver, and 25 bronze medals followed by Thailand with 33 gold, 31 silver, and 34 bronze medals.
