CEBU CITY—A lawyer was killed while his wife was wounded after they were ambushed by two men onboard a motorcycle in Sitio Looc, Barangay Poblacion, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, past 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23.
Lawyer Anthony Trinidad, 53, was driving his white Sports Utility Vehicle, Subaro, when the assailants who on a motorcycle suddenly drove by him, said Lieutenant Col. Bonifacio Tecson, chief of the Guihulngan Police Station.
The back rider, he said, then drew a pistol and shot Trinidad and his wife Novie Marie.
Trinidad lost control of the vehicle and accidentally bumped a trisikad which injured the driver.
The victims were rushed to the Guihulngan District Hospital but Trinidad was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
Trinidad’s wife was transferred to Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental’s capital.
Recovered from the crime scene were seven fired cartridges and two deformed slugs of a caliber 45 gun.
Tecson said they were conducting a thorough investigation to identify the perpetrators as well as the motive behind the killing.
“There’s a possibility that this has something to do with the cases he handled,” he told the Inquirer over the phone.
Tecson said Trinidad earlier told them about the death threats the lawyer received.
“He requested us to give him police escorts whenever he had hearings in Guihulngan. And we did give him escorts because we found the threats to be valid,” he explained.
“We want to know why he was in Guihulngan today. We also want to deepen our investigation because he might have several enemies,” he added.
