SEN. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go on Tuesday filed a resolution commending Sen. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao for bringing immense pride and joy to Filipinos following his recent boxing fete.
Pacquiao won – by a split decision – over American Keith Thurman and became the new World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Welterweight Champion after their fight on Sunday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The senator said that Pacquiao’s victory was the victory of the whole nation. “His life story, hard work and dedication to serve God and the People is an inspiration to all Filipinos.”
In filing Senate Resolution 20, Go said that “over the course of his long and decorated career, Senator Manny Pacquiao has managed to accomplish what no other boxer in history has accomplished.”
“He has captured twelve world-titles in eight separate weight divisions, marking an unprecedented ascent up the scales,” the resolution stated.
Go recounted Pacquiao’s boxing journey, from his win over Flyweight champion Chachai Sasakul of Thailand at 112 pounds, to his victory over Antonio Margarito of Mexico to capture the super welterweight title at 154 points, up until his recent victories at the stage of his career where most fighters have retired or greatly regressed in their skill.
Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Pacquiao was still “bull strong at 40, can roll with the punches and shuffle his feet like he’s 20, take some hard punches without being wobbly.”
“He is a good person whose heart is genuinely for the poor and needy. As a colleague and friend, all I want is for him to stay healthy in retirement,” Lacson said on Twitter. BERNADETTE E. TAMAYO
