Theater Arts Program students and Teatro 77 of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde stage Alberto Florentino’s “Cadaver” starting July 24 at the College’s Black Box Theater.
The play won First Honorable Mention in the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature in 1954, following his well-known work “The World Is An Apple,” which also bagged the First Prize for drama in that same year.
Florentino, who was a five-time Palanca awardee and a two-time Arena Theater winner, was also recognized as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) in 1960. The remarkable figure in Philippine literature was honored with a Presidential Medal of Merit in 2008 and a Patnubay ng Kalinganan Award from the City of Manila.
His mastery in writing was evident in over 100 plays that has graced the theater, the television and the widescreen. He has represented the country in various literary endeavors.
Director’s vision
Under the direction of emerging thespian Kyle Confesor, “Cadaver” is a one-act performance that follows the trajectories of three underprivileged Filipinos namely, Torio (Elijah Castillo), Carding (Ioel Briones), and Marina (Julia Enriquez and Alexandria Farrales as alternate) in their quest for survival and sanctuary in the midst of a city cemetery.
While the play pays tribute to Florentino and stays true to the original narrative which tackles the poignant truth of the man’s responsibility towards the consequences of his action, Benilde’s iteration also explores the director’s vision to use the stage to speak against the fascism and as a call to action in the context of “patayin ang kahirapan, huwag ang mahihirap” (kill poverty and not the poor).
A special metafictional scene featuring a character portraying the respectable Florentino (Adnan Musa Sarail) will further elevate the play’s goal to render a sense of nationalism and humanity.
Confesor, a current Theatre Arts Program student in Benilde, has acted in Nonon Padilla’s “Makbet,” “Misteryo ng Liwanag,” “Nuno Sa Punso,” and “Larawan ng Pilipino Bilang Artista” and Tuxqs Rutaquio’s “Pamantasang Hirang” and “Sa Isang Tingin.” He has also performed in Denisa Reyes’ “Neofilipino 2018” and “Ding, Ang Bato!” He is currently working under Mae Paner as stage manager and production manager for “Tao Po.”
After its debut performance, “Cadaver” will have regular runs at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. from Thursday, July 25 until Saturday, July 27.
