Isko Moreno says garbage stench at Vitas Slaughterhouse ‘nauseating’

MANILA, Philippines — “Kasula-sulasok,”(nauseating) was how Manila Mayor Isko Moreno described on Friday the stench coming from a pile of garbage at the Vitas Slaughterhouse during his second inspection.
Moreno also described the sorry state of the slaughterhouse as “terrible.”
“Nako, kung andito lang kayo pasensya na sa mga nanananghalian, terible. Tapos yung nakaka awa diyan, yung mga nasa likod natin, mga mahihirap nating kababayan, araw-araw nilang naaamoy yan, and walang ginagawa ang pamahalaan,” he said.
“Diba unfair yan sa mga mahihirap? Mahirap na nga e, baboy pa yung nasa paligid. diba parang.. Naku kung ang camera lang ho may pang amoy, naku Diyos ko,” he added.
According to Moreno, without proper sanitation in the area where beef cattle and pigs are butchered, meat products may be contaminated.
“Kailangan natin alisin yun kasi mag ke-create ng problema sa sanidad,” he said,
Aside from the scent at the Vitas slaughterhouse, Moreno also noticed the stagnant water that could be a breeding area for dengue carrying mosquitos.
Moreno has ordered local officials to immediately clean the area where the new slaughterhouse will be constructed. /muf
