HOW safety-conscious are you as a commuter? Some accidents and crimes can be prevented if commuters are alert and prepared. Take note of these tips.

Avoid commuting alone at night. If you can’t, travel by bus or train. When riding a bus, choose an aisle seat to avoid getting cornered.

Be observant. Never sleep while commuting. The likelihood of crime occurrence is greater when commuters are asleep and unaware of what is happening.

This is from the Bacolod City Police Office “Before boarding a taxi, bus or PUJ, take down or memorize it body number, plate number and the route. Text these data to your parents or members of your family and through call, mention the name of the driver, too, by looking at the I.D.”

If your destination is unfamiliar to you, travel with someone you can trust. Make a list of important streets and landmarks. Sit beside the window and near the exit area so you can easily see everything.

Refrain from displaying your gadgets and other valuables. Don’t wear expensive jewelry.

Prepare the exact fare at home and keep it secure in your pocket or coin purse so you won’t have to pull your wallet and count your money in public.

Avoid texting while waiting for a bus. Snatchers do attack in places where commuters stand in groups and in broad daylight.

If the person sitting next to you makes you feel uncomfortable, change seats.

Don’t give too much information about yourself and your family to a chatty and inquisitive passenger.

Remember vehicles with careless drivers. Don’t ride them again.
