The low-pressure area east of Mindanao will likely intensify into a tropical cyclone Tuesday and may enhance the southwest monsoon or “habagat” this week.
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration weather specialist Meno Mendoza said the LPA was estimated 1,380 kilometers east of Mindanao yesterday morning.
Mendoza said the LPA will likely enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility today.
“PAGASA is not discounting the possibility that the LPA will develop into a tropical depression by Tuesday but is less likely to make landfall over any part of the country,” he added.
Should it become a tropical depression inside the country’s area of responsibility, the weather disturbance will be locally called “Falcon.”
The trough or extension of the LPA is expected to bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao today.
Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will experience isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
PAGASA said the LPA is expected to move over the Philippine Sea north-northwest tomorrow.
It will enhance the habagat, which will bring cloudy skies and scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Masbate, and Visayas.
The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
By Tuesday and Wednesday, PAGASA said the weather disturbance will move towards Taiwan.
It will continue to enhance the habagat, which will bring rains over Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, Zambales, Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Masbate, and Visayas.
With the expected rains over Central Luzon, Angat Dam in Bulacan could benefit from the habagat rains. The dam’s water level continues to decline, at 159.45 meters yesterday from 159.69 last Friday.
La Mesa Dam in Quezon City was slightly higher at 72.16 meters yesterday, up from 72.06 meters last Friday, due to the heavy rains and thunderstorms over parts of Metro Manila in the afternoon.
However, both major water sources of Metro Manila remain below their normal level, at 180 meters for Angat Dam, and 80.15 meters for La Mesa Dam. (Ellalyn V. Ruiz)
