Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso said President Duterte should be given a chance to solve Metro Manila’s road gridlock.
“We should give the temporary power for one man to balance because the government is also balancing the judiciary, the executive, the legislature,” Domagoso said.
“So there are some instances even our law allows it. So why not?” he said.
However, he pointed out that the decision to grant emergency powers would depend on Congress and there should be safeguards in the grant of emergency powers.
“There should be a right amount of doubt, put it in a provision so that if there are abuses, that provision should go into effect,” he said.
“But in my opinion, why don’t we give it a chance?,” he added.
Domagoso said that Duterte, having been voted by some 16 million people, has “all the mandate” to address traffic problems plaguing the nation’s capital.
“Isn’t it that governance is about the people? Well, the people are happy with the leader, they have full trust. If he is the leader for that particular matter, ask Congress, ‘Congress, I need this, to implement this’ because that is his vision,” he said. (Erma Edera)
