Unidentified gunmen on board a motorcycle shot dead a broadcast journalist while on his way home after hosting his radio program in Kidapawan City in North Cotabato late Wednesday night.
Eduardo “Ed” Dizon died due to multiple bullet wounds he suffered during the attack that occurred at around 10:30 p.m. at the corner of the Quezon Boulevard and Diversion Road.
Police Col. Bernard Banac, spokesman of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said an in-depth investigation was already ordered to solve the killing.
“PNP chief, Police Gen. Oscar Albayalde, has directed the Police Regional Office 12 under Police Brig. Gen. Eliseo Rasco for immediate investigation of the incident to identify the suspects and make them accountable before the law,” said Banac.
Dizon was reportedly driving his car on his way home when at least two gunmen started shooting him.
In a statement, the National Union of Journalist of the Philippines stated that Dizon was still able to steer his car alongside the road but eventually died.
“If his murder is determined to be connected to his work, Dizon would be the 13th journalist killed under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte and the 186th since 1986,” the NUJP stated.
The victim, according to the NUJP, used to be the station manager. He quit to ran for councilor of Makilala, Cotabato. He, however, lost.
Prior to joining Brigada, he also anchored a public affairs program for Notre Dame Broadcasting Corp.’s DXND Radyo Bida and was a DJ for DXDM FM. (Aaron Recuenco)
