Ship catches fire in Mandaue

CEBU CITY – A passenger ship caught fire while being repaired in a port in Mandaue City Wednesday morning, and one of its crew was injured while trying the put the fire out.
The fire started at the galley air blower of MV Tran Asia, which was docked at F.F. Cruz Wharf in Pier 8.
The fire broke out at 3:48 a.m.
Coast Guard personnel from Cebu, Mandaue Quick Response Team and MRRV 4406 (BRP Suluan) responded to the fire alarm.
The fire was declared under control at 6:01 a.m. and was put out at 7:18 a.m., according to Lt. Jr. Grade Michael John Encina, spokesman for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Central Visayas.
Glen Ligit, one of the 36 crew members of the vessel, was injured after hitting his head on a hard object while trying to put out the fire.
Ligit was treated at a hospital.
Divers from Coast Guard Environmental Protection unit found no trace of oil leaking from the ship, said Encina.
The cause of fire is still being determined, and the vessel’s captain has been asked to file a marine protest, said Encina. (Calvin Cordova)
