The Philippine Volcanoes and Lady Volcanoes continue their rise in the world rankings – thanks to their sheer determination and courage despite great odds.
The Lady Volcanoes were in the spotlight recently after making it to the final of the 2019 Asia Rugby Women’s Championships held in Calamba, Laguna.
Though the result was an ugly one – the Chinese won convincingly, 68-0, – the Lady Volcanoes were commended for the efforts and character they showed.

They advanced to the final with a 32-27 win over the Indians.
The Philippines also won the silver medal last year which could be credited to the proper backing and to the way coach Fetala’i ‘Fitz’ Taua’a handles the team.
“There are two key elements which we need to improve on – core skills and fitness levels. And to be competitive, we need to be making clear-headed decisions when they matter most,” said the 40-year-old coach from Samoa.
As far as the need to focus on fitness, Fetala’i ‘Fitz’ Taua’a points out how the transition from a 15s to 7s rugby changes the complexion of the game.
“Our focus for the Nomads Men’s, Rogues 7s program and the Lady Volcanoes will a target fitness as we transition from 15s rugby to 7s rugby. These days training is moving towards utilizing little games which develop both skills and fitness at the same time keeping players engaged,” he explained.
